Tabletop Tableaux

Can narrative be applied to sculpture? Historically, there are many examples in religious art of tableaux of carved figures that freeze a moment in the story of the crucifixion or the nativity. The tableaux imply that there was a life before and there will be a life after the chosen event - that this is just one special moment, a frozen moment, in an unfolding story.

How does this relate to home furnishing? The Group has taken the IKEA range of LACK side tables ( £5 and what a bargain ) as an alternative to the traditional sculpture plinth. The dimensions of this almost invisible table, and its place within the home, becomes the starting point for a wide range of imaginative sculptural solutions that play with notions of scale, context and meaning.

Floribunda at Dean Clough Halifax

Yorkshire Sculptors Group presents an exhibition of sculptures that celebrates the floriated mosaic floor of the Dean Clough Upstairs Gallery in Halifax. Against a backdrop of exhuberant flower paintings by YSG member George Hainsworth the Group demonstrate their many diverse approaches and use of media with an imaginative and hybrid display of 'many-flowering' sculptures. The exhibition can be seen as a dialogue between the work of the painter and the work of the sculptor, a homage and a recognition of each discipline's intrinsic qualities.
