Chess Players (Resin, 1.2m wide)

I make both two and three dimensional work, using a wide range of techniques to express my feelings and convictions as emphatically as possible. I make my current sculptures from traditional materials like stone and wood, but also makes casts in resin and glass and small statuettes in bronze. Since becoming a member of the YSG 15 years ago, I have been encouraged to work at a larger scale for exterior sites, to tackle tactile sculpture, and to create pieces for large interior spaces such as cathedrals and churches.

Chess Players This piece comprises two resin casts from an original that was made in wood and plaster. The original was a formalised half-figure studying intently something before it, and the double mirror-repeat lent itself naturally to a pair of figures studying the same object in front of them, which is a puzzle or game of some sort. The nature of the game implies a process of selection, that each will undertake in turn. But the fact that the two participants are different colours is not insignificant. It makes the point I hope that Nature has created two figures identical in every way but colour, who can participate with enjoyment in a puzzle that they are sharing.
