Lazarus. (Resin, metal base, lm height) colour plate 8/9 I would hope my work emanates strongly my concern with abstract composition, formal engagement and technical experiment. I am interested in developing a figurative language in 2- and 3-dimenions, which satisfies my needs and is appropriate to our times. I have recently retired from the Leeds Metropolitan University as Professor of Fine Art. I was originally educated at the Leeds College of Art and did post-graduate study at the Slade School in London and at the British School in Rome (Gulbenkian Scholar). The teaching I received at Leeds was influenced by European philosophy and particularly by the Bauhaus experiment, with its didactic agenda to enrich society through the arts. This early exposure continues to influence my current work
LAZARUS: This piece represents the survival of an individual helped by divine intervention. Left to Nature he would have remained deceased. He is depicted at a moment of partial elevation from his burial position: ie at the moment of resurrection.
