Barry Midgley

This sculpture was originally designed to be carved in Ancaster weatherbed limestone. It's a stone of which I am fond as it is packed with fossils and so seems particularly suitable for themes relating to the sea.

The design was prompted by the death of a young man who had a history of drug abuse. He was in recovery but unfortunately was tempted to indulge once more and died from an overdose.

He had liked an earlier work that he had helped to site and this was a response to him. The ship is half way there, just as he was. Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing should be taken for granted

The design would have been a headstone in proportion to others in the cemetry. Sadly the commission was never approved..

Half way there
