Throughout the world many thousands of people are imprisoned for their beliefs, usually without trial and often in conditions of terrible cruelty , but while ever their voice can be heard, there is a chance that their cause may prevail.

Prisoner of Conscience 2:

If the outside world knows of their existence and some contact, however tenuous, is maintained, help might still be possible.

Prisoner of Conscience 3:

But if their plight is unknown, or they are forgotten, the doorway to freedom closes and any flicker of hope is quickly extinguished.

15. MALCOLM BROCKLESBY MA (Cantab) C Eng. Trained as an engineer and has been making sculpture for some 25 years. His work is based on the human form with varying degrees of abstraction. He has exhibited widely in Yorkshire, on his own and with the YSG and the Leeds Fine Art Club. His works have been purchased by English Heritage, companies and private collectors. Three military figures, 'The Defenders, are on display at Helmsley Castle and 'Madonna of the Cross l' is sited on the high altar at Mount Grace Priory . This Madonna is not the meek and subservient figure portrayed in many renaissance works, but a determined and intelligent young woman who understands the wonder and the importance of her calling; she is also aware of the suffering that this will entail. The figure of the Madonna is integral with that of the Cross, which is an inescapable part of her existence, and the way in which she holds the Christ Child high suggests the subsequent Ascension rather than the immediate prospect of a sacrificial death. 711e statue combines the three facets of Christianity which establish the Atonement of Mankind -the Nativity, the Crocifixion and the Ascension.
