4X A lovely grave slab marks the resting place of a member of the local population who held the office of Lord Mayor of Ripon four times. '4X' became a tribute rather than a transcription of the marble slab. It developed its own form. (Work also at Site 18)

18.Alan Gummerson was born in Bradford and studied at Bradford and Leeds. A Senior Lecturer at Leeds College of Art before taking early retirement in 1984 to concentrate on producing drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture. Currently produdng cast sculptures and drawn figures. Previous work also includes assemblages, prints and paintings. Part time lecturer and exhibition organiser working from home. Has held numerous one man shows in the north of England and London, and Group Shows in England, Europe and the USA. Work in public and private collections in Britain, USA, and Switzerland.

Title: Resurgam (I will rise again)

A clerical steam submarine 1879. A piece of sculpture that arose from a fascination with the Resurgam's shape and then became a secondary tribute to the young submariner who lost his life in 1917. (Work also at Site 21).
