Victoria Ferrand Scott

The sculpture that I make is abstract but quite organic and perhaps visceral in character. I aim to harness natural forces and processes ofgravity, pressure and elasticity in order to create something original which does not mimic nature but alludes to human, animal and plant forms. My methods are experimental so that my studio can sometimes resemble a laboratory. My aim is to create a form which although frozen in a moment in time can capture its process, its history and also its potential. I work with fluid materials such as plaster and concrete. By pouring into latex forms I am able to record the force of expansion in the resulting bulges. I influence the form by incorporating binding (often elastic) but I do not have complete control as there are many variants in terms of the making of the latex moulds, the mix ofthe plaster or concrete and the conditions under which they are poured and manipulated. Each piece is the result of a fragile balance between different elements and forces. When stretched to its limits the latex gives the setting liquid a smooth sensual surface that in the case of concrete resembles polished marble.
