Statement I am interested in the role of animals in society as regards their relationship with humans and the hierarchy they are afforded. The semantics of this also dominate how people regard each other and has somewhat of a basis in religion from the ancient Mayan and Egyptian cultures up to modern day Christianity. The sculptures I am presenting here are based on the stories of Noah’s Ark and The Snake in the Garden of Eden. 2x2 depicts the animals on their way to board the ark. However, the two of each species are morphed together to create one, representing the science vs religion debate, genetic modification and vivisection in the name of scientific progress. Untitled depicts a coiled snake created from many different animals. The idea is inspired by totem poles and animal statues of ancient religions, whilst also representing DNA splicing used in current technologies.
