A block of limestone randomly shaped was selected at Tout Quarry in Portland. It contains the memory of life's earliest existence, solidified multi-layers of living animal and plants . Inspired by the eroded limestone statues within the garden at Bowes, statues that were originally in the gardens of the Palace of Westminster, and loaned to the Bowes Museum in the early 20th Century, I have carved a work that combines the images of man, animals and plants and is surmounted by wings and the rays of the sun. Together it speaks of life, time and memory. Martin Nelson December May 2004
