Martin Nelson
Martin Nelson was born in London but has lived in Leeds for over 30 years. An Orthopaedic Surgeon from 1969 to 1992, he studied at Sheffield Hallam University, gaining a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1997. He completed an MA in sculpture at Bretton Hall (University of Leeds) in 1999 and in 2001 joined the Yorkshire Sculptors Group. Martin has exhibited alone and in group shows at, amongst others, Bretton Hall Gallery, the Henry Moore Institute Library (Leeds) and Rotherham Art Gallery. In 1997 he produced a commissioned sculpture for the Day Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital. Martin's stone carving and wood engraving explores the intrinsic qualities of his chosen materials. The piece on display is carved from serpentine, a very workable stone found in abundance in Zimbabwe. Martin is drawn to this particular material as its beauty is hidden in its layers, which are only revealed by carving. When waxed the stone glistens like glass.
