Malcolm Brocklesby
Malcolm
trained as an Engineer at Cambridge and Sheffield Universities before becoming
involved in the design of mining equipment and later establishing an interior
and product design company. He has been sculpting for some twenty five years.
Most of his work is based on human or animal forms, with a varying degree of
abstraction. His small pieces are usually cast in bronze. Glass reinforced polyester
is often used for larger works. Malcolm is drawn to the human figure feeling
that "One of the first things we have to do when we come into this world is
to recognise human beings; the importance of this is built into our conscious
and subconscious minds at a very fundamental level. Because of this the human
form, either natural or modified, provides a very powerful method of conveying
ideas or emotions." Martin has exhibited widely with the Yorkshire Sculptors
Group, including at Dean Clough Gallery, Mercer Gallery and York City Art Gallery.
Three of his military figures, The Defenders, are on display at Helmsley Castle
and his Madonna of the Cross is sited on the high altar at Mount Grace Priory.
