Lucy Hainsworth
I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, leaving in my mid-teens to come to England to study. My art training finished with three years at the Slade School of Fine Art, where I met George, and I have lived and worked in Yorkshire ever since. I spent 20 years teaching in primary schools as well as being a visiting Fine Art lecturer at Leeds Polytechnic/Metropolitan University and Jacob Kramer/Leeds College of Art, among others. I have been a member of YSG for 10 years, giving me opportunities for exhibiting sculpture in exciting and unusual venues. I exhibited in the 'Please Touch' exhibition at Beverley in 2001 and am delighted to be showing here again. The replicated figure that makes up the piece that is on display was originally inspired by the small stone figures (often beasts) that are carved on the cornices of cathedrals and minsters. The original single figure was backed up against what could have been an architectural feature, like a roof. However for this exhibition, the figure has been duplicated and the two confront each other with a game on a board between them.
