I
am fascinated by natural invisible forces, particularly the wind, which constantly
touches our lives. But, unlike clay, we cannot touch it. By using smoke to decorate
my ceramics I can see the movement of the wind and enjoy the random imprints
it leaves on my work. I am also concerned with independence, the contrasting
risks and benefits of standing alone, sometimes with support from others, sometimes
singularly self-supporting. The spheres are a metaphor for the universe, a reminder
of our infinitessimally small part within it, of our lack of understanding of
the world around us. I was born in Oldham on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border.
As a mature student I studied Design Ceramics at City College, Manchester, before
embarking on a degree course in ceramics at Bretton Hall (University of Leeds).
I work from a tiny studio space in Chorlton and am currently working on pieces
suitable for apartments, gardens and conservatories.
