George Hainsworth
I was born in Leeds and attended Leeds College of Art before gaining a place at the Slade School of Art. At the time I was a student in Leeds, the art education policy was a dynamic mix of the disciplines of painting and sculpture along the lines of the pre-war Bauhaus in Germany. As a result I have practised both painting and sculpture throughout my career and found mutual benefit from both. I taught Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic/Metropolitain University for many years. The pieces included in this exhibition are strongly figurative, with many strands of influence incorporated in their make-up. These influences span Cubism, Primitive and Prehistoric Art (both forms and artefacts), and of course the historical and cataclysmic events which have been a part of my experience of living in the 20th century and now the third millennium!
